6 Things You Need to Know About Ethics and Corporate Compliance in Healthcare

With the increased attention the US Government has been giving to financial crimes, fraud in the healthcare system and corporate fraud in the last couple of years, ethics and corporate compliance training(CCT) courses have also come into the spotlight. Though the importance of this type of training is evident in all types of companies and institutions, they are especially needed in the healthcare system, due to the large number of ethical issues usually involved in the medical field. Read on to find out more about ethics and CCT in healthcare.

Healthcare• The USA has a non-profit organization that offers ethics and corporate compliance resources for medical professional within the country, called The Health Care Compliance Association (HCCA). Apart from these resources, which include publications, educational courses, conferences and even a social network, the HCCA also helps individuals get their certificate in healthcare compliance.

• For an ethics and corporate course to be efficient it has to be implemented on all levels, from senior management to employees. Healthcare facilities are urged to designate a compliance officer, which can be represented by any member of the institution, to overview the efficiency of the course. The compliance officer will be responsible for reporting any worrisome issues or criminal conduct he or she has observed during executive meetings.

• Following any reports issued by the compliance officer, the healthcare institution is obliged to assess the situation, remedy any harm caused by the criminal conduct (such as offering restitution to all identifiable victims) and make any necessary adjustments to the ethics and corporate course in order to ensure its ongoing efficiency. In order for an ethics and corporate compliance course to have a real impact, the institution's management has to take it upon itself to strictly regulate the way the course is conducted.

• Ethics and corporate compliance in healthcare training is meant to help employees and management deal with issues such as employment, patient privacy, identity theft, diversity, harassment and to improve overall communication between members of the organization.

• Apart from online training applications, hospitals and other healthcare institutions can also take advantage of training DVDs, handbooks, and posters which they can display and distribute at staff meetings. This will help refresh everybody's memory on the lessons learned during the ethics and corporate compliance course.

• Most ethics and corporate compliance classes are offered online and can be accessed at any time, 24 hours a day, and 7 days a week. This leaves hospital management the liberty to organize the training course however they wish to. Additionally, most companies allow an unlimited number of members to sign up, so a hospital manager can easily introduce all staff members at once.

Ethics and corporate compliance training in the healthcare system is slowly starting to get the attention it deserves, as more and more institutions recognize its importance. For more information on this matter or if you have any questions regarding the ethics and compliance requirements, you can contact the HCAA.

Health means being free of all physical and mental illnesses. For every human being, health is not a gift but a responsibility. There are all sorts of viruses, bacteria, allergens, physical and mental conditions that make you sick and honestly, it is a difficult task to always maintain a perfect health. One step towards a healthy life is to know about these diseases and preventing them as much as you can. Even if they can't be prevented, you can still realize the symptoms and probable cures.

The secret to stay healthyIf you consult any health book or journal, you will find that there are a few determinants of health . These factors help to determine whether an individual is leading a healthy life or not. These include gender, culture, social, physical and natural environments, education, employment and health care services. Factors like clean water, fresh air contribute to good health while dust and contaminated food can cause diseases. A person working in coal mines is more likely to have respiratory and skin disorders because of exposure to coal dust. In addition to that, it is also believed that lack of recreational activities in neighborhoods also contributes to lower health rate and increases obesity. And of course, gender controls diseases like breast cancer is prevalent in women while hypertension affects more men than women. So to live a happy, healthy and long life, one has to take care of all these factors and implement a healthy lifestyle in their lives.

Almost every doctor, nutritionist, dietician and physician, advises his patients to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Sedentary lifestyle is one of the major causes of health disorders around the world. It has been proved that eating right, getting enough sleep, exercising, limiting alcohol and smoking can stay well. It is no quick fix; you really need to work hard to attain that level of fitness and lead a healthy and normal life. But it is not impossible as you will reap benefits once you start investing in yourself.

There are genetic factors too that play an important role in determining health of an individual. These are the traits that are either inherited by the parents or caused due to mutations in genes and it also encompasses filial habits developed in kids. Genetic disorders are gene abnormalities that are rare - these affect one in thousands. A few cancers are caused by these mutated or hereditary genes while heart diseases and diabetes is passed down from parents to kids. Unfortunately, genetic disorders are rarely treated effectively and for the same reason, couples these days opt for therapy before starting a family which helps them in determining disorders and probable illnesses.

Health science is a comprehensive study of human health. This branch of science exclusively deals with human body and helps in preventing, curing and understanding diseases. A great deal of work and effort has been invested in medicine and health science which is one of the reasons for advancement in medicine that the diseases like Polio, Smallpox, Measles and Malaria have been eradicated in many parts of the world.

In conclusion, health should not be taken lightly. If you are suffering from an illness, you need to consult a doctor, need to know about it and understand it. Ignorance is not a bliss as far as health and diseases are concerned.

Finding a Skilled OBGYN

Scheduling regular visits to the OBGYN is of vital importance. Preventative health measures are a serious matter and finding a qualified medical professional is something that you should take care of right away. You shouldn't procrastinate when it comes to your health. It is far too important for that.

If you are due for an appointment with an OBGYN, begin by asking your family members and friends which local medical professional that they visit. They should have a recommendation of someone you could visit. If they have a specific medical professional that they are happy with, be sure to investigate their credentials. You can usually do this by looking online.

If you do not know anyone in the area who can make a recommendation, conduct your own search. Look in your phone book for local OBGYN professionals. Then, narrow down your search by looking at the medical professionals' websites. There, you can usually find testimonials from previous patients and a list of the doctor's credentials. You can also look for reviews from other patients on other websites. Be sure to be thorough in your research.

After you have shortened your list of potential doctors, call the offices of your top choices to schedule a few consultations. Bring a list of questions or concerns with you to your consultation to ask the doctor. Some women have specific medical issues that they require treatment for, while others simply need annual exams. If they adequately answer your questions and you feel comfortable with them, consider making them him or her your regular doctor.

After meeting with them, if you think you have found the right doctor for you, be sure to check with the OBGYN office to make sure that your insurance is accepted. If not, you will have to consider one of the other doctors that you met with. Or, the office may be willing to take you on as a self-pay patient. Either way, you will want to make sure that a payment plan has been worked out in advance.

If you feel comfortable with the medical professional and payment arrangements have been made, you can confidentially schedule your next appointment with your OBGYN. And, in the future, remember what it was like to have to search for a new doctor. If a family member or friend asks you for a recommendation, be sure to share your experience with them as well.

What Is Polycythemia Vera?

Polycythemia VeraPolycythemia Vera or PV is defined as a stem cell disorder which is characterized as a malignant, panhyperplastic and neoplastic disorder of the bone marrow. This disease is associated with a prominent feature of an abnormally elevated absolute mass of red blood cells. This happens because the red blood cells grow in an uncontrolled manner. In addition to the increase in red blood cells, an increase in the production of white blood cells and blood platelets is also observed. This happens as a result of abnormal cloning of hematopoietic stem cells along with a high level of sensitivity with respect to the growth factors for maturation. Polycythemia vera is found in all age groups. As per the study conducted by Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, the occurrence was found to be most common for people in the age group of 70-79 years.

Causes

Polycythemia Vera is caused by the over production of red blood cells. However, it is also accompanied by an increase in the number of white blood cells and platelets as well. The occurrence of this rare disease is found more in men than women and it is more common in patients who are above the age of 40. The roots of this bone marrow disorder have been tracked to gene mutation called JAK2V617F but the basis of this mutation has not yet been discovered.

Symptoms

The symptoms of Polycythemia Vera arise as a result of an increase in the thickness of blood or as a result of blood clotting. The most common symptoms of this disorder are difficulty in breathing while lying down, dizziness, headache, excessive bleeding, feeling of itchiness (particularly after taking a warm bath), fullness in the left part of upper abdominal region (caused due to spleen enlargement), red coloration (especially of the face), certain phlebitis symptoms, and shortness of breath. In addition to these, some other symptoms which may not be too commonly found are fatigue, problems with vision, red skin spots, and bluish color of the skin.

Diagnosis

The diagnosis of Polycythemia Vera is not easy because this disease may not exhibit any signs or symptoms for years. It can only be diagnosed through routine blood tests which are carried out for some other purpose. In case the doctor feels that one's blood test results are not normal, the person may be advised to take more tests.

PV will be diagnosed based on the person's symptoms, overall health, medical history, age, physical examination, and test results. In the physical examination, the doctor will look for symptoms like red coloration on the face, bleeding of gums or an enlarged spleen. In case the doctor confirms the presence of Polycythemia, one will be referred to a Hematologist who will have to determine whether the Polycythemia is primary or secondary. For this, the person may have to undergo physical examination and some relevant tests. The blood tests through which PV can be diagnosed include a complete blood count, blood smear, erythropoietin level, and also bone marrow tests.

1.2 Million People in England Could Try to Quit Smoking

"As many as 1.2 million people in England could try to quit smoking in the New Year, figures suggest."

Cancer Research UK analysis of smoking trends since 2006 found January was the most popular month to quit, with an average of one in eight smokers trying.

The charity also said those who tried in January tended to be more successful than those trying in other months.

Try to Quit SmokingThe NHS is launching a campaign to raise awareness of the free support methods available to help smokers quit. In the New Year a series of "Getting Off Cigarettes" adverts will highlight the range of free stop-smoking support provided by the NHS. The last available figures showed around 24% of adults in England smoked.

With willpower alone, the chances of success are very small Professor Robert West The NHS Information Centre reported in September that more people had quit smoking in the first three months of 2007 than in any other quarter in anticipation of the smoking ban that came into force in the summer. Professor Robert West, director of tobacco studies at the Cancer Research UK Health Behaviour Unit, calculated that 13% of smokers tried to quit in January 2007 - the equivalent of every adult in Newcastle, Manchester, Coventry and Bristol. By monitoring trends in quit rates, he also found that those who chose to quit as their New Year's resolution did better than those who quit at other times of the year.

Success
He said: "We have found that almost half of all smokers actually try to quit at least once over the course of the year and one in eight try to quit in January. "But I was particularly interested to find that, contrary to popular scepticism of New Year's Resolutions, smokers who quit in January also tended to be more successful at staying off cigarettes." He said that many people did not know about the free support that was available to them on the NHS or were put off because they did not know what the services were offering.

"It's not like alcoholics anonymous, it's just practical advice," he said.

"With willpower alone, the chances of success are very small.

"The first thing is to get the right medication, whether that's nicotine replacement, zyban or champix, and the really important thing is having it explained exactly how to use it and to make sure you use enough of it."

Contrary to the NHS Information Centre report, his figures suggest that although people intended to quit because of the smoking ban, the actual number of people smoking has not yet changed.

"What we saw in Ireland was it took a few months for the effects to take hold."

Swine Flu Offers 'Extraordinary Super Immunity'

Swine flu infection boosted immunity to surprising degrees

People who recover from swine flu may be left with an extraordinary natural ability to fight off flu viruses, findings suggests.

In beating a bout of H1N1 the body makes antibodies that can kill many other flu strains, a study in the Journal of Experimental Medicine shows.

Doctors hope to harness this power to make a universal flu vaccine that would protect against any type of influenza.

Ultimately this could replace the "best guess" flu vaccines currently used.

Such a vaccine is the "holy grail" for flu researchers. Many scientists are already testing different prototypes to put an end to the yearly race to predict coming flu strains and quickly mass produce a new vaccine each flu season.

Dr Patrick Wilson who led the latest research said the H1N1 swine flu virus that reached pandemic levels infecting an estimated 60 million people last year, had provided a unique opportunity for researchers.
This work gives us more confidence that it will be possible to generate a universal flu vaccine”- Dr Sarah Gilbert Flu vaccine expert at Oxford University
"It demonstrates how to make a single vaccine that could potentially provide immunity to all influenza.

"The surprise was that such a very different influenza strain, as opposed to the most common strains, could lead us to something so widely applicable."
Extraordinary immunity

In the nine patients they studied who had caught swine flu during the pandemic, they found the infection had triggered the production of a wide range of antibodies that are only very rarely seen after seasonal flu infections or flu vaccination.

Five antibodies isolated by the team could fight all the seasonal H1N1 flu strains from the last decade, the devastating "Spanish flu" strain from 1918 which killed up to 50m people, plus a potentially deadly bird flu H5N1 strain.

The researchers believe the "extraordinarily" powerful antibodies were created as the body learned how to fight the new infection with swine flu using its old memory of how to fight off other flu viruses.

Next they plan to examine the immune response of people who were vaccinated against last year's swine flu but did not get sick to see if they too have the same super immunity to flu.

Dr Sarah Gilbert is a expert in viruses at Oxford University and has been testing her own prototype universal flu vaccine.

She said: "Many scientists are working to develop a vaccine that would protect against the many strains of flu virus.

"This work gives us more confidence that it will be possible to generate a universal flu vaccine."

But she said it would take many years for a product to go through the necessary tests and trials.

"It will take at least five years before anything like this could be widely available."

The number of deaths this winter from flu verified by the Health Protection Agency currently is 50, with 45 of these due to swine flu.

1) Anti Cancer : Celery is known to contain at least eight families of Anti-Cancer or Anti-Acid compounds. Among them are the acetylenics that have been shown to stop the growth of tumor cells. Phenolic which blocks the action of prostaglandins that encourage the growth of tumor or cancerous cells. And coumarins which help prevent metabolic and dietary acids from damaging cells. One of the active alkalizing compounds in celery is the phytochemical coumarin, which has been proven effective in cancer prevention and capable of enhancing the activity of certain white blood cells that help remove cancerous cells. The phytochemical coumarins prevent the formation and development of cancerous cells of the colon and stomach.

2) Pneumonia : Celery is a well known vegetable for supporting the immune system to help reduce metabolic and dietary acid. Celery is packed with antioxidants or alkalizing compounds that transforms bacteria, yeast and acids that cause inflammation.

3) Hay Fever : Celery comes on top of the list for foods that alleviates the acidic allergy symptoms. Also on that list are ginger, peppermint, parsley, turmeric, chamomile and cabbage.

4) Lower blood pressure : Drinking celery juice every day for a week significantly helps to lower blood pressure by reducing acidic plaque. An alkalzing compound called phtalides helps to relax the muscle around arteries, dilating the vessels and allowing blood to flow normally. To be effective, drink the juice for one week, stop for three weeks, and start over.

5) Cholesterol : This humble pale juice has been shown to effectively and significantly lower total cholesterol and LDL (bad) cholesterol by simply lowering dietary and metabolic acids.

One of the major policies that have been made in the field of health development is known as health reform. This policy deals with various sorts of changes and creations that affects the services positively that are connected to health care at a given place. It is purely a government initiative.

Health reforms have been formed for the purpose of achieving certain goals which are as follows:
• To increases the number of people who will be receiving the health care coverage. They can receive these highly beneficial health packages either through privately run insurance companies or by approaching the public sectors programs that are indulged in providing health insurances to common people.
• The plan consists of the expansion of areas that were previously under the array of health care providers. This will give the consumers a wide range of options to choose from.
• Easy access to various health oriented specialists in different parts of the world.
• To bring about a great improvement in the quality of the health care services provided by the medical practitioners.
• A remarkable decrease in the expenditures related to health and treatment.

The health reform legislation focuses on the denial of the pre-existing clauses that were once part of the whole reforms system. There are a number of rounds on which more amount of flexibility have been introduced. With the introduction of more resources to it, it has become more advantageous for people to get it done so that they can use it during the time of emergency. This can prove to be of great help for both you and your family.

If you deny getting it done only because you have to invest a particular amount of money monthly or annually, then it would be an act of sheer foolishness. You simply do not understand how much beneficial it can prove itself in protecting the health of your family and providing the excess of money when needed for any particular treatment.

Health Care Reform Cons

It seems that the more discussion there is in regard to health care reform, the more discussion there is in regard to health care reform cons. Undoubtedly, there has been a need for some type of health care over haul. Now that health care reform is a reality many Americans are faced with determining the pros and cons and how they will be affected beyond simple access to health care. In this article, we'll discuss different cons or concerns by those opposing and supporting health care reform and focus on the "biggest con of all".

Pros typically go hand in hand with cons. However, based on numerous emails and request we'll focus on the biggest con associated with health care reform and provide a follow up article addressing pros (aside from the following couple of pros/reasons for a reform).
1) As of 2008 there were more than forty million Americans who were uninsured.
2) A 2009 American journal of medicine study revealed that sixty two percent of 2007 bankruptcies were the related to medical expenses.

Obviously with so many being uninsured and filing bankruptcy, one would say that there is definitely a need for health care reform. However, when we take a closer look, we see different ways that the change will affect us as well as shed a light on deeper issues. First, the forty plus million uninsured individuals could be somewhat tainted in that these figures likely include undocumented immigrants. Second, of the 2007 bankruptcies (sixty two percent of which were related to medical expenses) over sixty percent of the individuals had medical insurance!

That leads us to one of the biggest cons and one that should be reviewed very closely. That is insurance ignorance (being insured without the knowledge of how your plan works). Sixty percent of 2007 bankruptcies were medical related and sixty percent of those had medical insurance. The problem here is quite simple in that individuals securing health coverage are doing so without truly knowing what their coverage means. Does that sound familiar? How about the recent housing implosion? The housing crisis stemmed from many different contributors.

However, it is a widely held view that many new homeowners simply had little knowledge of the terms of their loans and/or those who held the knowledge (lenders, appraisers, originators etc) failed to do an appropriate job in educating or even attempting to educate potential new homeowners. Many times an individual may be "covered" by an insurance carrier. However, in an attempt to have low monthly premiums, the individual may choose to have a high deductible.

A monthly premium of $100 or less sounds fantastic until a major health issue or accident arises and the individual must come up with thousands in order to meet a deductible. Bear in mind that a car accident causing the need for major medical work can cost $3,000-$5,000 per day in hospital stay alone (this does not include the actual surgery to repair the damage). In most cases individuals have no idea how much a hospital stay will run them nor do they have any idea of the bankruptcy statistics.

There are certainly other cons associated with health care reform. Some include longer wait times for individuals to receive diagnosis due to an increased number of insured individuals. However, the "pro" ponents of health care reform would say that this opens the door for more jobs. Other cons include the growth of the federal deficit and increase in taxes we pay. As well as it being difficult to administer because it is too hard to determine what type of coverage should be the minimum guaranteed.

There are many more cons to reform. However, the one that we find most troubling is the knowledge of what an individual will receive in their newly gained policy. Let's not walk down the path of mandating insurance for all individuals without mandating certain information that must be shared with the end consumer. The statistics speak for themselves. More than half of the bankruptcies of 2007 were medical related and more than half of those individuals had coverage. It may be possible to help individuals find credit relief prior to their downfall. However, it will start with the "reformers" implementing health plans and health education based on the statistics that we currently have at our fingertips.

High-dose Vitamin D Prevents Fractures in Elderly

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - A new analysis of nearly a dozen studies testing vitamin D in older individuals has concluded that it takes a daily dose of at least 800 international units (IU) to consistently prevent broken bones.

A dose that high was found to reduce the risk of hip fracture by 30 percent and other breaks by 14 percent. Lower doses didn't have any effect.

The report, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, also suggests that too much calcium -- perhaps more than 1,000 milligrams (mg) per day -- can weaken the benefit.

"These hip fractures cost a lot and are a really serious event. They are usually the end of independent life for a senior person; 50 percent do not regain their mobility. Reducing the risk by 30 percent with just a vitamin supplement would be an enormous public health opportunity," study researcher Dr. Heike Bischoff-Ferrari of University Hospital Zurich in Switzerland told Reuters Health.

The Institute of Medicine recommends that most adults get 1,000 to 1,200 mg of calcium per day and 600 to 800 IU of vitamin D. It sets a recommended upper limit at 2,000 mg of calcium and 4,000 IU of vitamin D.
High-dose Vitamin D Prevents Fractures in ElderlyBischoff-Ferrari said the lack of benefit seen in other studies "may be explained by adherence to treatment and vitamin D supplements taken outside the study medication."

Dr. Richard Bockman, a hormone expert at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York, said the findings are an important counterbalance to last month's widely-reported recommendation by the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force.

The government-backed task force advised against taking doses of less than 400 IU of vitamin D with 1,000 mg of calcium and concluded the evidence was unclear for higher doses. It also said the supplements carry a risk of side effects such as kidney stones.

Bockman said the best trial is a 2003 study, known as the Trivedi trial, in which volunteers received an average of 800 IU per day as a single 100,000 IU dose every four months.

"It clearly showed a reduction in fracture risk in people who were getting vitamin D," he said.

In an editorial, Dr. Robert Heaney of Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska, said the problem with the conflicting studies may be that most have failed to consider each person's vitamin D levels to start with.

Giving it to people who already have enough, or not giving enough to people with very low levels, may show no benefit, he said.

"In this regard, as in several other respects, nutrients are unlike drugs. Once an adequate concentration has been achieved, additional intake has no effect," said Heaney.

Bischoff-Ferrari said the new results came without directly including the Trivedi results. "The authors lost the data sets to a computer accident," she said.

The new analysis is based on 11 trials that tested various regimens of oral vitamin D in people age 65 and older, mostly women, against an inactive placebo. Some of the trials also included calcium.

Overall, there were 4,881 hip and other fractures (not including breaks of the spine) among more than 31,000 people.

Vitamin D did not cut the rate of hip fracture significantly, and the drop in other fractures was small. When the researchers looked at people getting the highest doses of the vitamin, typically 800 IU daily, the benefits were clearer, with a 30-percent drop in hip fractures and 14-percent decline in other broken bones.

"Notably, there was no reduction in the risk of hip fracture at any actual intake level lower than 792 IU per day," the researchers said.

The benefits at the higher dose were seen regardless of age, additional calcium intake, whether the patients lived at home or in an institution, and baseline levels vitamin D.

Bischoff-Ferrari said the clearest impact was seen in nursing home patients, who were given the highest doses of vitamin D and regularly took their pills because the nurses were giving them.

Just as important is the discovery that too much calcium - more than 1,000 mg per day - may dilute vitamin D's benefits to bones, she said. Because many supplements contain 1,000 mg, the calcium people get in their diets may send people over the limit.

"This is a very, very important public health message," Bischoff-Ferrari said. "There are still doctors around who are giving calcium without vitamin to hip fracture patients. Imagine giving a calcium supplement and increasing the fracture risk."

In an earlier study, she added, fewer than 10 percent of the people coming into the hospital for a hip fracture had been taking the vitamin. And 60 percent of them had suffered another fracture in the prior decade, yet "the red flag is not coming up."

"In the medical world, vitamin D seems like a very low priority. It may be the lack of lobbying for it, the fact that it costs almost nothing" and some people think it's too good to be true, she said. "But the data are impressive."
